On February 16, Fraunhofer CSE hosted the U.S. Green Building Council’s Building Tech Forum 2017: The Rise of the Smart Cities at CSE’s office and “Living Laboratory” for sustainable energy systems in South Boston. A panel and networking sessions focused on how smart cities can contribute to a sustainable environment and how the Massachusetts community of practitioners can be best positioned to support future-proof building design.

The Executive Director of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Massachusetts Chapter, Grey Lee, invited the representatives of the City of Boston, building industry, academia, and green building enthusiasts to exchange ideas, network and learn about activities in the smart building and green building community. Among the speakers were Fraunhofer CSE’s Executive Director Dr. Christian Hoepfner, and Dr. Kurt Roth, who introduced CSE’s work in building energy management and enclosures, photovoltaics and grid integration of renewable energy. Panel participants Jascha Franklin-Hodge of the City of Boston, Jennie Stephens of Northeastern University, Gretchen Sweeney of the USGBC, Brycen Spencer of Siemens, and Ryan Blackmon of Union Point discussed managing projects related to smart cities, smart building trends, innovative building design, and barriers for the rise of smart cities.
